Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs penalty area.

What next for both teams?

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
