UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a abandoned church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
