Generational striker Erling Haaland secures an opportunity in his premier global event in the upcoming season, thanks to his efforts with Norway to the World Cup.

And the 25-year-old Manchester City striker accomplished it through remarkable fashion, scoring 16 goals in eight World Cup qualifying matches - finding the back of the net consistently in every one of those games.

That makes him the leading goalscorer in 2026 World Cup preliminary stage in any continent.

And his national team's 4-1 win in Italy on Sunday, with Haaland netting two goals, ensures they will participating in next summer's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The striker commented following the match: "I'm delighted, but more relieved. There's significant pressure and things, and I experience it. But it's exciting."

It will be just their fourth World Cup, and their premier global event since the 2000 European Championship.

How Important Has Haaland Been?

The striker's scoring statistics for Norway is nothing short of phenomenal.

He has scored 55 goals in 48 matches for his country.

And in fact he is merely the sixth athlete ever, and the first in 53 years, to net 50 strikes in less than 50 appearances.

The team's earlier top scorer was Juve with 33 strikes, who kept that distinction for almost a century.

During these qualifying matches he scored 16 goals - in eight games - plus two assists.

That is double the goals tally anyone else has registered in European qualifying.

He remains the highest scorer in these qualifying matches in all continents, including areas where teams play twice the number of encounters.

Over a year has gone by since Haaland most recently didn't net in a match for his country.

Team Effort Alongside Haaland

But it is not only about Haaland.

Captain Martin Odegaard, 26, has greater goal contributions than anyone else in UEFA qualification - seven assists.

The Arsenal midfielder has featured in 67 matches for Norway since his initial cap at the tender age of fifteen.
