A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.
