A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and you become starving," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
