This represented a carefully worded statement, attributing harm not to the departure decision but to its implementation; blaming the officials who handled it, not the public who supported it. The aim is to attribute certain economic problems to the agreement reached under previous leadership without seeming to disrespect the hopes of leave voters.

The aim is to connect Farage to a notorious case of political mis-selling, implying he is unreliable; that he exploits discontent and sows division but cannot manage effectively.

If Starmer and Reeves wish to be seen as antidotes to Faragism, they must demonstrate meanwhile with a positively defined agenda of their own.
